Been slacking on both sketching and posting. I've decided upon a strategy: I went through the remainder of my sketchbook and dated every page, one page per day. I'm going to try to fill a sketchbook page per day. Obviously they won't all be great, and only a few will be post-worthy, but I'm starting here.

So this Saturday I will be doing my first ever live-painting performance type thing. It is a fundraiser for the Denver Art Society, some friends of mine that are trying to provide free art education for Denver youth. If you're in Denver, come on by! The non-update update

Really falling off the blog posts. I'm actually working my ass off, it just happens to be on other things. One thing I recently cranked out in my "personal time" (hah!) is the new ASIFA-Colorado website. It's a very simple blog-based site, not exactly an Earth shaking technological marvel, but for a long time ASIFA has been in need of a site redesign. We needed something that has some modern features, with an emphasis on convenient editing, posting, etc. to allow the Board of Directors to efficiently get info out to members. The site's a WIP and I'll definitely be adding a lot more features and content in the coming weeks. I've also been working 12 hour days at work developing some pretty far out experimental ActionScript/Flash stuff, which has been pretty wild considering that's not exactly my area of expertise. The results are looking really cool, and I'll post something as soon as I'm able. In the meantime, here are a few quick gesture drawings from a recent life drawing session:

If you visit artist blogs very often, you know that BART sketches are a whole genre in and of themselves. The studio artists in the bay area are always doodling masterpieces with sharpies and sticky notes on the way to work. The last time I was in S.F., I did dozens of sketches while riding BART. Well, today I had my car in the shop and decided to take Denver's RTD lightrail to work and do some public transit sketching of my own. It was a short, bumpy ride but I managed to get one quick sketch out of it.

Today's sketch is inspired by (and derived from) a new resource that I was happy to stumble upon: The National Museum of Health and Medicine's Flickr feed. It's a treasure trove of references for historical medical oddities, antiquated surgical procedures, battlefield injuries, health and science related wartime propaganda, and lots of other cool stuff. This drawing is derived from a photo of Cpl. Rufus S. Sinclair of Maine, who on April 6th 1865 sustained a "gunshot fracture of clavicle" in the battle of Farmsville, Virginia...as you can see.

It's been too hot to draw. Or sketch. Or paint. And I ran out of sketchbook. So I walked to the Art Store the other day in the blistering heat and, despite the Elements, searched and searched for a pile of planar tree matter manifest of the perfect Platonic Solid. I didn't find it. I never do. However, the blue cover Strathmore Windpower Sketch seems to be a worthy axe for the time being (even if it's a bit lacking in the logorythmic nautilian category, resulting in a distinct though not altogether distasteful visual buzz). The sight of a brand new sketchbook, with it's pristine, crisp white pages, has struck me as rather boring of late. So I decided to deflower the new rig with a wild, full page watercolor sketch, in order to let a few wrinkles, stains, and general riff raff into the room. Now, the serious sketching can commence.

A friend of mine hosts a weekly "sketching night" at his place. It usually has as much to do with drinking beer and telling stories as sketching sketches. Anyway, last night I grabbed one of his wife's Forensic Pathology textbooks for some inspiration (blech!). I decided to reference photos of two different genetic disorders and combine them to make the world's unluckiest siamese twins. Most frequent comment: "disturbing!" Pen sketch, toned up with a few minutes of PS work today.

I think I'm done with this one. This is, obviously, the finished version of the WIP from a few posts down.This is a copy of a gouache portrait by Adolf von Menzel from 1863. This was my first experiment with mixing a fleshtone palette, which was interesting. Thanks to Tara's awesome tips, I was able to get a halfway decent photo of it. Well, after doing a copy and a still-life, I think I'm ready to try one of my own concepts next. Stay tuned. Thanks for stopping by.

Another lunch sketch. So, I noticed that I haven't been posting any images of females at all. I'm not really into the macho he-man, battle axe swinging art either, but I do notice that my sketchbooks seem to be lacking in subject matter that could even remotely be called "delicate." So, after thinking about that a bit, I decided to give it a go. Also, this was sketched directly into Photoshop, rather than doing a quick pencil sketch, scanning it and finishing it in PS like I normally do. Gotta try new things.

btw - wrapping up the last painting and starting a new one. Things are going well so far. And seriously, if anyone has any tips for photographing oil paintings, please share.
